Tips For Deep Cleaning Your Kitchen

house cleaningEver wanted to really give your kitchen a thorough deep cleaning, but found the task just too overwhelming? Kitchens need much more than just surface cleaning, as they are breeding grounds for bacteria and other germs. This is the place where we prepare our food, clean our dishes and even eat our meals. So why would you not give it a thorough deep clean from time to time? It can be an intimidating task, but like any other room that you deep clean, you just need to take it in small sections. The good thing about cleaning your kitchen is that it gives you a great opportunity to toss things out and re-organize your space. Here are some good house cleaning tips to get you started…

Creating A Plan For Kitchen Cleaning

Clean Out The Pantry

When it comes to kitchen cleaning, it is best to tackle one area at a time, starting with the pantry. If your pantry hasn’t been cleaned out in a long time, then you need to first go through everything and throw away what is out of date, spoiled, or stale. You should also check your dry goods for pantry bugs. These are little bugs that look more like fleas. They are most often brought home from the grocery store and you don’t even know it, so they begin to infest your dry goods supply. Check any cereals, grains, flour, crackers, rice, etc. If you see any at all, throw those items away. It may seem like a big waste, but you need to get rid of them completely and sometimes that means starting fresh. After cleaning out the pantry items, restock your dry items in airtight containers. Anything in a bag or box should be transferred to containers with tight fitting lids. Of course, before you put everything back in, you need to wash the walls, sweep out the floor area and wipe off the shelves.

Tackle The Fridge

Cleaning the refrigerator out is often times the least favorite task to tackle and many times, it just doesn’t become a priority. But if you think about it, your refrigerator should be the cleanest spot in the kitchen, being where your food is kept! Start by taking everything out of the fridge and place it on the countertop. Wash out the fridge crisper drawers, remove the shelves if possible and scrub them also with soap and water, rather than just wiping them with glass cleaner. Pop the glass out of the plastic if it’s removable and scrub out the grooves where it sits. Lots of grime and food gets stuck in these nooks and crannies. After cleaning and sanitizing everything, place the items back in the fridge, grouping like items together. Think about function and adjust your shelves accordingly. Don’t store milk or eggs in the door. It is a warmer area and you should always store dairy products in the coldest part of the fridge. Throw away items that are out of date and don’t take chances. If you aren’t planning on using up your leftovers, then go ahead and get rid of it so it doesn’t sit and become a science experiment!

Cleaning Out Your Cabinets.

With the pantry and refrigerator done, take a look in your cabinets. If things look messy or thrown in without much thought, then take a moment to consider how you move around in your kitchen. The idea here is to make it as functional as possible—for you. What works for someone else might not work well for you. Think outside the box. For instance, I have drawers by the stove with a big deep one on the bottom. I store all the lids to my pots and pans in that drawer and that way they don’t get in the way and fall all over the place when I need to find a pot. Consider getting a magnetic knife strip to place above your stove. Knives that hang stay sharper much longer than being in a drawer.

Another great house cleaning Myrtle Beach tip for organizing all those plastic containers is to keep all the lids in a cleaning caddy. I have a caddy with two deep sides and the handle that comes up in the middle. I place all the lids in the two compartments and store the caddy beside another large basket that holds all my containers and bowls. You can easily remove the bins or caddy and find what you’re looking for. No more avalanche of plastic falling on your head every time you open the cabinet door!

Finish Up With Cleaning The Floors.

The last thing you should do is clean out the sink, spray disinfectant on all the countertop and wipe that down, and then sweep and mop the floor. Start on the far side of the kitchen and mop yourself out of the room.

Deep cleaning your kitchen doesn’t have to be a daunting task if you have a plan of attack. The rewards are great and you and your family will be healthier for it.
