Little River is one of the oldest settlements in South Carolina. It’s history can be traced back to the late 1600s and 1700s. It was named after the stream Mineola, which became part of the Intracoastal Waterway back in 1936.
Pirates and shipwreck survivors used the harbour for rest and repairs. They forced settlers to help them and give them supplies. Names like Anne Bonney, Stede Bonnette, Blackbeard, and Captain Kidd are popular names in the area.
There were only two villages in the county according to The Robert Mills Atlas of Horry District S.C. in 1828 and these were Conwayborough and Little River. In the past, river swamps and marshes made travel difficult between the two. Little River also got the name “Yankee Town” back in the day because some people from New England came to reside in the place.
During the 1850s, the village started to prosper. Stores, banks, schools, waterhouses, sawmills started to open up. Unfortunately, the Civil War eliminated all the progress that the village had known. It became hosts to blockade runners, smugglers, and pirates. But they eventually disappeared when roads started to get built during the 1920s. Today, Little River has become popular for commercial fishing and charter boats.
